How it all started – and where I am now in my art journey
In 2023, after a long time, I picked up drawing again. As a child I already liked to draw, but somewhere along the way that had disappeared. Until I suddenly picked it up again - and noticed how much peace and pleasure it gave me.
I started with a few online courses and slowly became more interested in painting. First I watched YouTube videos, later online workshops followed. That's how I ended up at Milan Art. After a few individual workshops I became more and more enthusiastic. I did some online research and decided to take the plunge: I signed up for their Mastery Program.
The first steps: drawing, oil painting and discipline
In October 2024 I started the first part of the training. The focus was mainly on the basics of drawing and different techniques with oil paint - something I had never worked with before. That is exactly why it was so special to make a number of paintings after a few weeks that I was really proud of. I never expected to be able to do this in such a short time, especially not without previous painting experience. In the picture my first oil painting!
At the same time, I did the assignments at the kitchen table, with a table easel. Everything had to be put away after each session, which sometimes made it a bit harder to start over. But the love for making kept growing. I now have a place upstairs with a real easel — still no studio of my own, but it already feels more like my own space.
Halfway: mixed media & discovering your own style
I am now halfway through part 2 of the course, and have also completed parts 3 and 4 in terms of theory. In this part, the focus is on mixed media and developing your own style. You learn to try out different techniques, discover your personal archetype and how to manage your time efficiently - even if, like me, you have a busy job and a family in addition to your studies.
What I am discovering now is how much I like mixed media: the freedom to combine, work layer upon layer and play with structures. And at the same time I keep going back to oil paint — because of the color intensity and the finish. The disadvantage: oil paint dries slowly and you can't put anything else on top of it. That's why I often work on multiple works at the same time.
What it has brought me so far
The Milan Art Mastery Program taught me a lot: techniques, materials, use of color and oil paint. But perhaps even more importantly: it gave me self-confidence.
I now know that it's okay to doubt. That there are times when you think, "This is not going to work, what have I gotten myself into?" But when you go through that, you often end up doing your best work.
Every time I paint, it brings me new ideas, new insights. And every layer I add is more than paint — it is emotion, peace, processing. For me it is not a final product, but a process. A way to clear my head, to give my feelings space.
All emotions are allowed to be there. And you will find them in my work.
